Signs

Posting signs helps communicate why an office has chosen certain actions.

Example: A sign posted explaining the importance of utilizing recycling bins and the impact they have. “By recycling our paper and plastic products we are decreasing the amount of waste sent to the landfill and ensuring the products are utilized/reused in the future.”

Electronic Newsletters

Having an electronic only newsletter eliminates the use of paper and the energy and materials used to processes and make the paper.

  • Paper mills uses 40% less energy to make paper from recycled paper than they do making paper from unused timber.
  • A ton of paper made from recycled fibers conserves 7,000 gallons of water
  • Recycling 1 soft drink bottle will save enough energy to run a TV for 1 ½ hours 9

Team Tips

Create a sustainability team in your office by selecting a few members to meet once a month and discuss the office’s progress. The team is free to use their imagination to help improve the office. A few ideas for the sustainability team include:

  • Make a creative team name.
  • Ensure the office is recycling all excess paper.
  • Motivate employees to turn off their computers at night and use energy saving modes during the day.
  • Unplug all small appliances e.g. toasters, personal printers etc.
  • Encourage paperless staff meetings.
  • Create your own office “Bring your own bottle day” (B.Y.O.B. Day).
  • Evaluate the ability for your office to car pool.
  • Create your own sustainable office tip of the month.
  • Be sure to document the team’s progress and achievements to receive points.
  • Maintain and update an office bulletin board with posters and information about all things sustainable where everyone can see it.
    • Be resourceful and create the bulletin board out of an old box! Unfold it, tape the cut edges together and decorate it. You can cover it with a fabric or just simply put a border around it.
  • Discover more projects your office can do to become more sustainable and remember to submit your sustainable innovation projects for points.
